Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty
What is a Tummy Tuck?
Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer. Sometimes dieting and exercising are simply not enough to take care of waistline problems. A patient may wish to consider a tummy tuck procedure if they have excess accumulation of skin.
Common reasons for a Tummy Tuck
People usually consider surgery when they have lost skin due to:
- Weight loss or pregnancy
- Loss of skin elasticity
- Problem scars from a previous abdominal surgery
Tummy Tuck Procedure
We offer two types of tummy tuck procedures, a mini tummy tuck, and a full tummy tuck. A mini tummy tuck removes any excess skin and fatty deposits from the abdominal region but does not repair the muscles. A full tummy tuck will remove excess skin and fatty deposits from the abdomen, along with the repositioning of abdomen muscles into a tighter formation.
If needed liposuction may also be performed during a full tummy tuck procedure. A horizontal incision will be made in the lower abdomen area, just above the pubic bone. The length of the incision will be based on the amount of treatment needed. For this procedure, patients can undergo general anesthesia. This surgical procedure may take anywhere between 2 to 4 hours to complete.
Abdominoplasty Surgery Expectations
It is important to keep in mind that a tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program. Results of a tummy tuck are technically permanent, However, the end result may vary depending on significant fluctuations in your weight. For this reason, individuals who are planning substantial weight loss or women who may be considering future pregnancies would be advised to postpone a tummy tuck.
Tummy tuck recovery
After surgery, it may take 1 to 2 weeks before a patient can return to their regular daily activities. It may take 6 to 8 weeks before a patient can return to strenuous activity; such as running or lifting weights. Patients may experience some swelling and a moderate amount of pain during the healing process. The pain will be controlled with oral medications. The stitches typically used are designed to dissolve within 1 to 2 weeks after the surgery and do not require removal.
Will I have a permanent scar?
Scars from a tummy tuck procedure may take 1 to 2 years to mature.
