If You Want to Look Younger, Attend to the Skin on Your Neck
- Posted on: Jun 15 2016
While facial aging tops the list of concerns for most men and women who seek treatments like injectables or plastic surgery, there is a great need to remember the skin that sits just south of your face. Regardless of what you do about sagging jowls, crow’s feet, or a heavy brow, the skin on your neck can make you look older than you would like.
Keeping it Young with Collagen
While there are instances in which professional treatment is needed to remove fatty deposits from beneath the chin, or to surgically tighten the skin, many of our patients are able to encourage youthfulness with simple home care.
Collagen is one of the most talked-about resources relating to youthful skin. This is because the skin is quite literally held up by numerous strands of this fibrous protein. During adolescence, ample amounts of collagen are naturally produced by the body. As early as our twenties, however, production slows. By age 40 to 50, we can all but say goodbye to naturally-produced collagen. If we want it, and the beautiful skin it creates, we must make sure to encourage production.
Maintaining Healthy Collagen
In recent years, we have seen a surge in collagen-rebuilding products and treatments. These include chemical peels and laser or light based therapies. Each type of treatment has its own advantages. For instance, certain types of light or laser energy have been shown to break apart pigmented cells that cause hyperpigmentation or sun spots. Chemical peels provide gentle, controlled exfoliation through which cellular regeneration occurs at an expedited rate, and collagen production is promoted.
Professional care is not the only way to care for the delicate skin on the neck. One significant Canadian study demonstrated the power of exercise on skin tightness. Study participants who exercised at moderate-intensity 2 days a week produced skin samples that were thicker and more elastic than their own previous samples. This gives us even more reason to hit the pavement!
