Breast Augmentation

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as breast enhancement and breast enlargement, is a surgical procedure that improves the shape and size of the breast. A breast implant procedure is done to enhance the shape and size of the breast. This procedure is designed to fulfill the patient’s personal desires and goals. Breast augmentation can also be combined with a breast lift.

Benefits of a Breast Augmentation

There are many personal reasons a breast augmentation may be considered; to fulfill goals of a fuller breast, to enhance body shape, increase breast volume after pregnancy or nursing, equalize the difference in breast size to gain symmetry or reconstruction of the breast after a mastectomy or injury.

Types of Breast Implants

We offer our patients two different types of implant fill:

  • Saline
  • Silicone

Silicon Implants vs. Saline Implants

There are a few major differences between the two implants. Saline is generally used for patients under the age of 22 and silicone can only be used for patients over the age of 22.

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water and provide a uniform shape, firmness, and feel. Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel. The gel feels a bit more like natural breast tissue. If you choose silicone implants, you may need to visit your plastic surgeon regularly to make sure the implants are functioning properly.

Choosing a Breast Implant Size

It can be difficult when choosing the appropriate implant size and type, there are also many factors that need to be considered.

Our surgeons will meet with you to go over the following factors:

  • Current breast size
  • Breast height
  • Breast width
  • Breast projection
  • Breast shape
  • Pregnancy history
  • Age
  • Weight
  • Desired goal

The incision lengths are different; an incision for a saline implant is smaller than the incision for a silicone implant. Silicone implants feel more like breast tissue and give a very natural look, whereas saline implants give a firmer look, but may feel slightly artificial. Silicone implants may also be known as gummy bear implants.

Different incision lengths and techniques may be used for this procedure. Incisions usually vary 3-5 cm in length and may be performed inframammary (through the fold of the breast), periareolar (around the areola), axillary (through the armpit), and umbilicus (through the belly button). For this procedure, patients can undergo general anesthesia or twilight anesthesia. Twilight anesthesia is an IV sedation anesthesia in addition to a local anesthetic.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

After a breast augmentation, it may take 3 to 7 days before a patient can return to their regular daily activities. It may take 6 to 8 weeks before a patient can return to strenuous activity, such as running or lifting weights. Patients may experience some swelling, bruising, and a moderate amount of pain during the healing process. The pain will be controlled with oral medications. It may take up to 3 months for the implant to settle, during this time the patient should avoid wearing an underwire bra.

How long do breast implants last?

The FDA recommends implants should be replaced every 10 years and an MRI is administered every two years. A follow-up with a physician and the surgeon should be done yearly.
